Across the Strait of Gibraltar
The shortest crossings to Morocco are at the strait, and they are the densest in the whole network. Tarifa - Tangier lands right by the old town of Tangier; Algeciras - Tanger Med goes to the big ferry port to the east of it, with considerably more sailings and every vehicle class.
The Spanish ports further east
Further east along the Andalusian coast lie the ports for north-eastern Morocco. Almería and Motril serve Nador, and Motril also Al Hoceima and Tanger Med. These crossings are longer than the strait, but they save the drive along the Moroccan coast.
The long routes from France and Italy
If you would rather not drive through Spain, you cross further north. Barcelona, Sète and Marseille sail to Tanger Med, Sète also to Nador; from Italy, Genoa and Civitavecchia join in. All are overnight ferries with more than one night on board.
What to watch out for in the timetable
The summer peak shapes these routes more than any other season in Europe: in the months when the Moroccan diaspora travels home, extra ships are added and the vehicle decks sell out long in advance. Outside that period the schedule is noticeably thinner.
On the strait it is not the departure that decides but the processing: border and customs checks happen before boarding, and for Tanger Med the Moroccan entry formalities are handled on board. Allow more time at the port than the crossing time suggests.

The Strait of Gibraltar has the busiest ferry traffic: Algeciras - Tanger Med has up to 22 departures a day in peak season, Algeciras - Ceuta up to 15, and Tarifa - Tangier 8 to 12 daily crossings. From Almería to Nador and Melilla, there are usually daily to several weekly departures. The long routes from France and Italy run less often, typically just once or a few times a week.

The quickest crossing is over the Strait of Gibraltar: Tarifa - Tangier and Algeciras - Tanger Med take around 1 to 1.5 hours. From Almería to Nador or Melilla, the crossing takes around 5 to 9 hours. The Mediterranean routes from Marseille and Sète to Tanger Med take around 39 to 42 hours, and from Genoa around 51 hours.
Does the Morocco ferry timetable change with the season? +
Yes. The timetable is busiest in summer, especially from June to September, when ferry operators add extra departures. This is also when crossings are most crowded, mainly due to Moroccans living in Europe returning home for the holidays. Some routes from Motril, Marseille and Sète to Nador or Al Hoceima run mostly in summer and are reduced or suspended in winter. Always check the departures for your specific travel date.
