About Naviera Armas
Naviera Armas is a Spanish ferry operator based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was founded in 1941 on Lanzarote by Antonio Armas Curbelo; in 1975 it brought the first ro-ro ships to the Canary Islands, and passenger services began in 1995. With its acquisition of the traditional operator Trasmediterránea, the company grew into the Armas Trasmediterránea group, which serves Andalusia, Ceuta, Melilla, Morocco and Algeria alongside the Canary Islands. In 2025, Baleària agreed to acquire the group, and Spain's competition authority approved the deal in March 2026; since May 2026 the Canary Islands business has traded as Baleària Canarias, while the Morocco and Algeria lines continue to run under Armas Trasmediterránea.
Ships and fleet
The fleet consists of Volcán-class fast ferries and conventional ferries. On the Morocco routes, the conventional ships are deployed: the Volcán de Tamasite, with room for 1,500 passengers and 300 vehicles, on Algeciras - Tanger Med; the Juan J. Sister, with 806 passengers and 220 vehicles, on Almería - Nador; and the Volcán de Timanfaya, with 1,000 passengers and 300 vehicles. On board there are two- and four-berth cabins with en suite bathrooms, seating lounges in several categories, a restaurant and bar-cafeteria with halal, children's and gluten-free menus, Wi-Fi, children's areas and, in summer, a pool on deck.
Routes to Morocco
From Andalusia, Naviera Armas runs three links: the overnight Almería - Nador ferry into eastern Morocco, the short daytime crossing Motril - Nador from the Costa Tropical, which is strongly seasonal and busier in summer, and Algeciras - Tanger Med across the Strait of Gibraltar, where the operator competes alongside Baleària, FRS and AML. Check-in, vehicles and pets
Under the conditions of carriage, you must be checked in for boarding on conventional ferries at least 60 minutes before departure with a vehicle and 30 minutes on foot, or two hours before in Tanger Med. Because passport and customs checks are added on the Morocco routes, you should build in considerably more buffer time. You need a valid passport for Morocco - an ID card is not enough.
Cars, motorbikes and motorhomes travel on every route; declare the dimensions when booking. Pets travel only in the on-board kennels on the Morocco and Algeria routes, never in the cabin; when boarding and disembarking, keep your dog on a lead and muzzled, while other animals stay in a carrier. A pet passport and valid rabies vaccination are compulsory.
