A ferry to Morocco costs from around €10 as a foot passenger in 2026, or from about €90 with a car (one way, low season). The cheapest and fastest crossing is over the Strait of Gibraltar: the fast ferries from Algeciras and Tarifa cross the strait in one to one-and-a-half hours, and no cabin is needed. If you're arriving from France or Italy and want to avoid the drive through Spain, the long Mediterranean routes from Sète, Marseille or Genoa cost several times more, but save you days behind the wheel.
The price depends on route, operator, season and above all on the vehicle: foot passengers always pay the least, a car pushes the fare up considerably, and motorhome prices are set by length. In summer, during the Operación Marhaba period from mid-June to early September, hundreds of thousands of people cross to visit family in Morocco, prices climb and ferries sell out early. Spring and autumn are noticeably cheaper. Below you'll find current 2026 entry-level prices for every route, compared side by side for foot passengers, cars and motorhomes.
Short crossings over the Strait of Gibraltar
The shortest crossings, and the cheapest per person, run over the strait between Andalusia and North Africa. The main artery is Algeciras - Tanger Med: four operators run round the clock, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half to reach Morocco's deep-water port, roughly 40 kilometres east of Tangier itself. An even quicker option, though it lands you in a Spanish enclave rather than Morocco, is Algeciras - Ceuta, around an hour. If you want to arrive right in central Tangier, take Tarifa - Tanger Ville, the only ferry into the city port.
On all three routes, foot passengers pay the least, from around €10-12. With a car, fares to Tanger Med run from around €165-180, since the vehicle fare far outweighs the passenger fare. Travelling to Ceuta counts as travel within Spain: there's no border control on board, and you pay in euros. Travelling to Tangier, Moroccan border police stamp your passport during the crossing itself.
Overnight ferries to Melilla and Nador
Further east, overnight ferries depart from Almería, Málaga and Motril. They take several hours across the Alboran Sea, mostly sail overnight, and offer cabins. Travelling to Almería - Melilla counts as travel within Spain, just like Ceuta, so an ID card is enough. For Almería - Nador and the other Moroccan ports, however, you'll need a passport and will go through border formalities at the port. By car, the Melilla routes start from around €90, with the longer routes to Nador and Al Hoceima priced higher.
Long Mediterranean routes from France and Italy
If you're travelling from further afield in Europe, the direct ferries save you the multi-day drive through Spain. Marseille - Tanger Med takes around 40 hours, Sète - Tanger Med around 42 hours, and Genoa - Tanger Med about 51 hours. On these crossings you'll spend one or two nights on board, and a cabin is either compulsory or strongly recommended, it's not included in the foot-passenger fare. Entry-level prices start from around €80 per person, with the vehicle fare added on top depending on length.
Vehicle fares: priced by length
With every operator, the vehicle fare is set by the dimensions of the vehicle, not the number of people travelling. A standard car falls into the cheapest fare band, while motorhomes, caravan-and-tow combinations and tall vans move into higher categories. When booking, enter the length and height accurately, including any roof box or bike rack, a few centimetres can shift the price bracket and the surcharge with it. Motril - Tanger Med: currently suspended
The former direct route Motril - Tanger Med is not currently operating and cannot be booked. If you're heading to Tanger Med, use the frequently running short crossings from Algeciras or Tarifa instead; from Motril, the overnight ferries to Melilla, Nador and Al Hoceima remain in service.

Book early
The cheapest allocation fares sell out fast. Book two to four months ahead to lock in the lowest prices, especially for the busy summer departures.
Travel in the low season
Spring, autumn and winter are noticeably cheaper than summer. Avoid the Operación Marhaba period from mid-June to early September: hundreds of thousands of people cross during this time, so prices rise and many departures sell out.
Travel midweek
Departures from Tuesday to Thursday are usually cheaper than at weekends. If your dates are flexible, shift the crossing to a quiet weekday.
Book the return trip together
Many operators give a discount when you book the outbound and return crossing together. It's almost always worth it, even if you want to keep your return date flexible.

What's the difference between the ports of Ceuta, Melilla and Tangier?+
Ceuta and Melilla are technically part of Spain: both are Spanish cities, there's no border control on board, payment is in euros, and a valid ID card is enough. For Morocco itself (Tangier, Nador, Al Hoceima) you need a passport; Moroccan entry formalities on the short crossings are handled on board.
Can I still take the ferry from Motril to Tanger Med?+
